The 2001 film ‘Captain Corelli’s Mandolin’ had us all pining for a holiday in Kefalonia, with its perfect blue sea and rocky island scenery. If eight years later you still haven’t visited then now’s the perfect time to treat yourself to a Kefalonia villa rental.

Staying in a Kefalonia villa gives you a more personal feel to this breathtakingly beautiful island. Whilst the success of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin may have resulted a surge in the number of tourists visiting Kefalonia, a Kefalonia villa rental will make you feel as if you are the only visitors to this secluded ancient island.

As well as a rugged coastline, inner mountain range and spectacular beaches, Kefalonia also boasts some truly fantastic Roman remains. However, an earthquake in 1953 destroyed most of the old island and as a consequence, you’ll discover on your holiday in Kefalonia that many buildings now have an almost modern feel to them. That said, the island is still extremely appealing, with its old harbours and derelict Venetian style architecture.

Many of the attractive Venetian buildings are located in Sami and Argostoli, the two towns that survived the earthquake a little better than the rest of the island and as such were the main towns used during the filming of ‘Captain Corelli’s Mandolin’. Fiskardo is another example of a beautifully preserved Venetian town, which is popular with yachts during the summer season. A Kefalonia villa rental in this part of the island will give you the chance to mingle amongst the elite on your holidays.

The island has many intriguing landmarks for you to explore from your Kefalonia villa, Skala has an ancient Roman villa which contains some remnants of ancient mosaics. If you choose to take a day trip here whilst on your holidays in Kefalonia then be sure to visit the nearby white sandy beach. The beach is perfect for scuba diving and the tourist resort also contains a nightclub on the seafront, called Spilos, with the price of admission including your first drink inside.

The capital of Kefalonia is Argostoli, a quaint fishing village which is famous for its daily fish market, with fish freshly caught from the many boats that dot the old harbour. If you want to sample the catch of the day then eating at any of the traditional tavernas located in the area is a must whilst on your holiday in Kefalonia.

The town of Sami also has an ancient acropolis which dates from the 5th Century BC and provides historians with an insight into the historic past of the island. Whilst staying in your Kefalonia villa you simply must make a stop in this town en route to the nearby Melissani Lake and Drograti Caves. The Melissani Lake is a turquoise hued crystal clear lake in which visitors are taken around on a small rowing boat where they can marvel at all the stalactites. The Drograti Caves were discovered 300 years ago during an earthquake and feature some truly impressive stalactites and stalacmites for you to admire whilst on your holiday in Kefalonia.
