When my best friend Vanessa told me she was getting married and wanted me to be her chief bridesmaid I was extremely honoured. Vanessa had been in a relationship with her fiancé for over 13 years and I wasn’t alone on the thinking they would never get married!
As chief bridesmaid I had a lot of responsibility especially when it came to the hen do. Vanessa is not the type of person who likes to be centre of attention I think this was why it took her so long to agree to get married. Of course being the bride didn’t mean she would get a choice on what I had got planned for her.
I wanted the hen do to be a night to remember and to be one of taste and sophistication. I had been strictly instructed that there was to be no stripper, not that I would have organised one. Men covered in baby oil wearing nothing but a tiny thong was never my thing!
What with the whole credit crunch I was conscious of keeping the whole event on a small budget. Plus there were lots of us going, both friends and family so the numbers had really added up. I had decided that a trip to Birmingham would suit all tastes. There is plenty to do here – and I knew Vanessa would love it, as she is addicted to shopping and fine dining.
Deciding on the location was the easy part, but how we were going to travel there proved a little more difficult.
Getting the train was my first option but it meant that we could all be separated on the journey and we might not all get a seat as it was during peak times. After a little investigation and asking around I was recommended to a local coach hire company. As there were so many of us ladies I decided taking the coach was by far the best option.
At first I thought hiring a coach would be way above our budget but I was pleasantly surprised. I found a brilliant deal for a luxury coach at a fantastic price. This was ideal for the hen do and it meant we could all travel together. I had organised some party games for us on the way, which proved very entertaining.
Looking back now I maybe should have kept more an eye on Aunt Patsy as she was a little worse for wear, and this was before we got off the coach!
The coach driver was a total diamond and deserved a medal. He had to put up with a coach of shrieking tipsy women who gave him all the attention, as he was the only bit of testosterone we could get our hands on. We all had a fabulous time in Birmingham and the coach waited for us patiently and took us back to Northampton.
We did a whip round for the coach hire driver as he had really made the whole experience much more pleasant and entertaining.
