The vehicles are fitted with two or three powerful spotlights, and if you’re lucky, you’ll be given control of one. On the call of the ranger you can swing the spot around and it’s possible to suddenly be face to face with a hippo, rhino, zebra, giraffe or even a bewildered baboon!
As you trundle through the park on your night safari in South Africa, the air is filled with the calls and echoes of the myriad species of park animals heading to the waterholes. You may find the road blocked by a herd of wildebeest trooping down to the waters edge, passing you by within inches – a hundred tiny eyes reflecting spookily in the headlights – or you could even encounter the Lion King, stealthily stalking his prey and dusting off his paws for dinner!
