Amongst Mayo’s vast landscape, there are some of the best places in Ireland for walking. Walking is one of the first things that come natural to us but very often taken for granted. Really, get away from it all and learn to appreciate why Mayo is ideal for this particular activity. Mayo offers walkers some thing special.
When you get out more, it is easy to see the fantastic views & un spoilt Mayo countryside. There are Island Walks, Coastal Walks, Mountain Walks, Forest walks & Nature Walks to name a few. Mayo County Council has been busy developing walks in Mayo for the past number of years. The result is a collection of the very best safe, signposted walks in Ireland. Any of the Tourist Information offices will have maps and advice on recommended walks. All the walks are colour coded for difficulty levels. So, no need to worry about bringing the kids along for the stroll!
Clear Island is just four miles out from the Mayo coast. The Island cannot be mentioned without mentioning one of its most famous pirates of her time, Grainneuaile (pronounced Gra nea whale). Grace O Malley as she was also known as struck fear into many an army in her time. You see Clare Island will explain itself to you because all the Island features including the O Malley castle of the past are as they were except for an upgrade to the pier. Inishturk, or Turk as the locals in the know know it. Turk is about nine miles out from the Mayo coast. This Island offers a couple of great walks from one and half to two and half hours. As with any walking activity rain gear and some snacks are a good idea. Of course, a good pair of walking boots and away you go.
If taking the short boat trip to the Islands is not your thing and you prefer to stick to dry land then that is ok too. There are some great costal and in land walks. No matter where you are in Mayo, there is a walk path a short drive away. Many of these end up back to where you started out (Loop Walks). These walks are a great way to get started if you are new to this kind of walking. These walks can start at two three kilometres and anything up towards thirteen kilometres and sometimes more. There are landmarks marked along the way and some information explaining them. Alliteratively there is lots of information on the leaflet from the tourist office. Therefore, you can piece together snippets about the county while taking a well earned sit down.
Forest walks or nature walks are great for children… and adults too. It can surprise even yourself by what you remember from younger days. What might seem very natural to us adults can open up a child’s imagination with minimum effort. They will bring it up in conversations repeatedly and tell their friends of their adventure. Mayo is for walking. Try it!
