Wintertime is the best time to get out and hit the slopes. Whether you are a first timer or a seasoned ski veteran, skiing is perfect winter escape and a great alternative to lounging on the beach, especially for those vacationers who don’t enjoy lounging around at all, and want to get out there and do something! But before you rent your skis or purchase those lift tickets, here is an idea of what you should plan on packing to insure that you enjoy your ski vacation to the fullest!
1. Ski/Snowboard waterproof pants and jacket. Before you pack anything, you should be sure that you have these. Having a sufficient top layer will insure that you are not only warm, but it will help to keep your other clothes dry.
2. Long underwear. This is an important part of any skier’s wardrobe, because they will not only keep you warm, but they will also give you the ability to wear less under your waterproof clothes. The less you wear, then the less you will sweat, and the warmer you will be.
3. Fleece. A great fleece pullover and/or fleece sweat pants are great for layering over your long underwear and under your waterproof clothes. Fleece is lightweight and extremely warm.
4. Warm socks. The best way to keep your feet warm while skiing is to wear a pair of cotton socks with a pair of wool socks over them. Most of the time, when your feet get cold, it’s because they are sweating. By layering with a pair of cotton socks, they will help to wick away moisture and keep your feet warmer longer.
5. Waterproof gloves/mittens. This is an important part of your skiing wardrobe, because it will protect your hands. You want to make sure they are heavy duty and waterproof. If you want to make sure you are getting gloves that are meant for skiing, then you may want to wait until you get to the slopes and purchase some gloves from a local ski/sports shop. These types of shops will usually carry great gloves at a reasonable price.
6. Hat. Since most of your body heat is lost through your head, its important to invest in a great hat. It doesn’t necessarily have to be waterproof and a knit beanie should do the trick. But you want to make sure it pulls down enough to cover to ears to help give your ears the protection they need.
7. Scarf or face cover. These are important to help protect your neck and your face from the cold, especially on the ski lift.
8. Sunglasses or goggles. Eye protection should always be on your list, because they will increase your ability to see while you are skiing, and they will protect your eyes from the sun and the cold. If you choose to go with sunglasses, be sure to invest in a pair that fit closely to your face and wrap around the entire eye.
In addition to the things you would normally pack for a vacation, these items are extremely important to have on a ski trip. Unless you’re an avid skier or live close to the mountains, I wouldn’t worry about purchasing skies or boots, because you can usually rent them at the ski resort for a reasonable price and that will save you from having to lug them around or fit them into your car.
