In South Africa by the southern coast of Western Cape in the Overberg area and near Walker Bay, you will find the town of Hermanus. This town is situated close to the Garden Route of South Africa. The town of Hermanus was originally called Hermanuspietersfontein. This town is quite famous as a whale watching area and in particular Southern Right Whales.

Here if you come during the southern winter time and the spring you will be able to see whales in the ocean waters off the coast. A good place while you are in Hermanus to whale watch would be the cliffs above the town. If you prefer to come here during the summer months you might want to come from June onwards and try your luck.

The backdrop of mountains which can be seen from the town are quite spectacular. Here you can stay during the migration months of these whales. To celebrate the whales stay in Hermanus you will be able to watch the Hermanus Whale Festival. You will also have the best chance of seeing these gentle giants from the numerous boats which venture out to sea. The whales’ path to Hermanus takes them along the coast of South Africa and one destination they have is that of Walker Bay where the town of Hermanus is situated.

Within the safety and sanctuary these Right Whales will calve and look after their young. In between whale watching you will find there are many interesting activities that you can take part in. One of these activities that you may want to see is that of visiting the Old Harbor Museum. This museum contains various exhibits which explains to the visitor the whaling history of Hermanus. In the early days of the town the whales that came to Walker Bay were hunted but they are now protected. It is for this reason that you will be able to see this whaling history in the town’s museum.

Apart from Whale Watching you will find that you can explore the countryside and take part in various activities such as horseback riding, hiking, boating, and fishing to name but a few. Another interesting adventure that you can add to your holiday in Hermanus would be that of a Great White Tour. On this tour you will have a great chance of seeing these majestic sharks up close and personal if you desire. The tour will give you the chance of cage diving so that you can see these giant predators from the safety of the cage. On the other hand for those of you who are not insane you can watch these sharks from the safety of the boat.

Along with the sharks you will be able to see other marine life. These will include dolphins, seals, whales, penguins, and many other varieties of marine birds. For the more adventurous you can travel from Hermanus to Gansbaai which is 40 kilometers from the town. From this famous point you can dive amongst the Great White Sharks.

For the adventure of a lifetime you will find the town of Hermanus is the perfect spot. Here not only will you be able to relax among the beauties of nature but you will also be able to see Southern Right Whales, Great White Sharks and a host of other animals who live on and near the ocean. With all of these wonders you are sure to find your time spent in Hermanus as the best holiday ever.
